AGM 2015 Staff Report

Thank-you all for attending the 2015 Wilson Centre Seniors’ Advisory Association AGM.

It’s been a busy year in the City and at the Centre.

We transitioned from CLASS software to ActiveNet. It was a huge job for staff and we would like to thank the members for their patience and support during the change. With ActiveNet came membership changes, the biggest being memberships are valid for a year from the date of purchase as opposed to expiring on December 31 each year. Also in effect is a revised refund policy. l suggest everyone review the revised policy at the customer service desk.

The Board was successful in obtaining an HRDC grant to partially pay to summer staff. One staff was used at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village and the other was used to provide support to children with needs in the summer daycamps. The Board was also successful in again obtaining a Farmer’s Market grant which provided $15 in coupons weekly to 25 families and individuals in Port Coquitlam.

lt was a great year for Wilson Centre events. In January we celebrated Robbie Burns Day, February was Chinese New Year, then came St Patrick’s Day, the Volunteer Lunch. May Day, brought the Mayor’s Banquet and Breakfast. The Board had their horse and carriage, and the Honeycombs had their float as well. We would like to again thank Amica, the Rotary, the Knights of Columbus and PoCo Bowl for their seniors’ week sponsorship. Congratulations to Junita Franco for being voted Senior of the Year.

This past summer, we had an increase in the number of programs and participants. We had a successful BBQ.

Upcoming until the end of the year, is Oktoberfest, the Veteran’s Tea and a free Christmas lunch for members, once again, generously sponsored by Harkin and Tidal towing.

Staff were sad to see the CVSS doors close this fall. We’re hopeful SHARE can continue to provide the services the CVSS staff did with such compassion and kindness.

The Choir is thriving and is at capacity. Nigel the director does an excellent job in leading the group. They have performed at a variety of senior’s homes and still have some performances coming up. The Choir is appreciative of Albert doing such a great job booking them.

We have offered a number of new programs this past year. We now have a complete continuum of fitness programs; something available for all abilities. We have noticed some long term programs have run their course, with declining interest and enrollment.

ln closing, l would like to thank all of our members for your kindness and support to the staff and I. l would also like to especially thank all of our volunteers; in the kitchen, selling 50/50, blood pressure clinics and everything else you do!
