The Wilson Seniors Advisory Association has been promoting the well-being of seniors in Port Coquitlam since 1992. To celebrate 30 successful years, the Board invites all seniors in Port Coquitlam to one of our series of special events in 2022-2023. These events are funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program and supported by the City of Port Coquitlam. The special events are hosted by The Wilson Seniors Advisory Association.
New Horizons is a federal grants and contributions program whose goal is to support projects that help improve the well-being of seniors and foster social inclusion and engagement in their communities. As part of the celebration, we will be hosting a series of bus excursions, expert-led workshops, and dances and socials.
Bus Excursions will be held from September to February, and we have planned the following:
SEPTEMBER 29th BLOEDEL CONSERVATORY AND DR. SUN YAT-SEN CLASSICAL GARDEN
Bloedel Conservatory is a domed lush paradise located in Queen Elizabeth Park atop the City. More than 100 exotic birds and 500 exotic plants and flowers thrive within its temperature-controlled environment. Step back in time to 15th century China and visit the garden home of a scholar- official’s family. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden is the first of its kind built outside of China.
OCTOBER 20TH: THE MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY AND UBC BOTANICAL GARDENS
On the spectacular grounds of UBC s the Museum of Anthropology (MOA), housing one of the finest displays of Northwest Coast First Nations arts in an impressive building overlooking our coastal mountains and the Salish Sea. Nearby is the UBC Botanical Garden. Immerse yourself in the world of wild-collected plants. Stroll through the impressive Asian garden and travel the continents in the alpine garden, and head back in time in the traditional physic garden
nOVEMBER 23RD: BRITANNIA MINE MUSEUM
Let’s head north on the famous and very scenic Sea to Sky Highway to our destination the Britannia Mine Museum. A multi-million dollar makeover transformed this historic mine into a multi-award-winning museum and natural Historic Site. Less than 100 years ago, this was the largest copper mine in the British Empire. Just like the miners of years past, we don hard hats, then climb an underground train and travel into the past.
DECEMBER 5TH BURNABY HERITAGE VILLAGE
One of the region’s most evocative old-school Christmas attractions, Burnaby Village Museum’s clapboard historic site is transformed into a charming reminder of yesteryear holidays at this time of year. But it’s not just the bright-painted antique buildings that appeal; the site is also studded with traditional decorations and twinkling lights to warm your cockles as you wander the streets. It’s hard to resist the glowing windows of the General Store and more. Seasonal entertainment, demonstrations and other festive-themed activities add to the fun. Another treasure from 1912 is the C.W. Parker Carousel. Riders, of all ages, can experience the thrill of this vintage machine. Let’s get into the Christmas spirit as we are transported back to the 1920s.
JANUARY 25TH VANCOUVER AQUARIUM AND STANLEY PARK
A sanctuary in the heart of Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium, an Ocean Wise® initiative, is home to thousands of incredible ocean species and amazing aquatic life. It is also Ocean Wise headquarters, where our scientists, educators and conservation experts do their work, not only to protect our oceans but to inspire others to join in the mission. Enjoy a scenic ride through Stanley Park following our aquarium visit.
FEBRUARY 23RD: SCIENCE WORLD
Let’s become explorers and scientists for a day! Ignite your curiosity and discover the wonders of science and technology at Science World. Immerse yourself in interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits, inspirational feature exhibitions and jaw-dropping live science demonstrations. Encounter the prehistoric wonders of the late Cretaceous Period and come face-to-face with a 66-million- year-old marvel. In T-Rex: . Experience the resurgence of Northwest Coast Canoe Cultures in Sacred Journey. Through immersive and interactive experiences, Sacred journey unveils the incredible story of the traditional ocean-going canoe and invites visitors to bear witness to the power of Tribal Canoe Journeys.
